Property Description

"Wallacia" the Wallace Homestead, home of Doctor William S. Wallace (Brother-In-Law & Doctor to President Abraham Lincoln). A one of a kind historic stone home with a list of early political figures including President Abraham Lincoln who stepped foot on the property since 1761. If you are looking to own a true piece of history, this is the property for you. The old homestead known as Wallacia is well documented over its 260 year history. It remained in the Wallace family from 1761 until 1966. It appears as an engraving on the 1855 Three Earls map. It appears again within the pages of the book written by Marion Wallace Reninger entitled My Lincoln Letter printed by Rudisill & Company in 1953. And if you type in the names of Dr. William Smith Wallace and President Abraham Lincoln the internet will confirm even more of the homes history. This grand old stone homestead was built in three sections between 1761 and 1794. The center section and the rear stone ender portion being the oldest. The last section built on the west end of the house served as both an early mercantile general store and a stage coach stop. One can only imagine the history that took place within these walls. The house still maintains many original features from its early years. The exterior has changed very little from the 1855 engraving on the Three Earls Map of East Earl Township. Inside you can still find original 1700s built in corner cupboards, door locks, latches and hinges, wide random width plank flooring, wood pegged beams and timbers marked with roman numerals, even two massive stone cooking fireplaces, and a smoke house room with the original meat hooks still in the ceiling. Even an old heirloom grapevine and arbor is to the rear entrance to the house, which produces beautiful fruit each year. But this charming old house has its modern amenities as well. It proudly boasts a remodeled kitchen with new custom cabinets, granite countertops, dishwasher, glass top stove, and a built in double oven. An open archway connects the kitchen to the dining room surrounded by deep window sills. The bathroom has been remodeled but retains the original 1920s clawfoot tub and sink. A new LP gas furnace with hot water heat utilizing refurbished hot water radiators. And public water & sewer. All interior rooms have been repainted with the Williamsburg Color Collection by Benjamin Moore Paints. And new half round gutters and downspouts have been installed to complement and protect the repointed stone walls. Outside on the .65 Acre lot stands both an 18 x 20 block garage and a 10 x 18 horse stable. A nice garden is planted next to the horse stable. The yard is lined with a stone wall on two sides and full of roses, hollies, trees, flowers and bushes. Two large covered porches on both the front and the rear of the house provide shade for a restful retreat. The house is located halfway between Lancaster and Philadelphia Pa. on Division Highway (Route 322) with easily access to both Route 23 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). Close to schools, shopping and outdoor farmers markets and road stands for fresh produce when in season. Lancaster Amtrak train station is less than 14 miles away. Amtrak has service to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York City.
